Libra is the seventh sign of the zodiac and represents the seventh stage of human evolution. Libra is the first sign that recognizes others as individuals with the same feelings, drives, wants, and needs as ourselves. Although we recognize that there is a collective group that is distinct from our sense of self through the signs of Leo and Virgo, not until Libra do we begin to realize that this group is made up of other individuals. Libra seeks to reconnect to the source through balance and harmony.

Libra is a cardinal air sign. As a cardinal sign, Libra is involved in the initial creative process and is concerned with initiating, and with taking action. As a cardinal sign, Libra is also fundamentally concerned with the question of identity. As an air sign, Libra operates in the mental and social realm. Libra is therefore concerned with expressing our mental and social identity. Libra, like all air signs, is a double sign and fundamentally understands the concept of opposites. The ability to always see both sides of a situation lends air signs in general, and Libra in particular, a great deal of objectivity.

Ruled by Venus, Libra is strongly motivated by both beauty and relationships. Libra seeks to answer the question of identity through one-to-one relationships, and more importantly, through finding a balance and a harmony within these relationships. Libra's need to relate to something isn't limited to other individuals, either. Libra can relate to art, music, mathematics, science, and also to Libra's personal connection with the creator and the universal source.

Saturn, the planet of limitations, structure, and responsibility, is exalted in the sign of Libra, and this shows that Libra also has a fundamental sense of Justice that connects strongly with Libra's need for balance and harmony. With the realization that there are other individuals in the world, Libra also accepts a great deal of personal responsibility. Always aware of how the actions of others (or of the collective) affect us, Libra now understands that our individual actions also have effects on other individuals.

Libra is truly the diplomat of the zodiac. No other sign has such a refined understanding of the laws of balance and harmony, or such a true appreciation of the astounding beauty that lies within all things harmonious and balanced. Libra seeks to create, with others, a greater sense of beauty and harmony in the universe. Libra's desire for relationship can, however, lead to dependence on others, and Libra's need for balance and harmony can sometimes lead to either being manipulated or manipulating others. Because Libra is an air sign, this type of behavior may seem to be the most logical and reasonable approach; Libra is not particularly in touch with the emotions that would often disagree with this line of thinking. What Libra must learn more than anything is that the only way to find true balance and harmony in a relationship is to maintain and express our own individuality to the fullest extent, and to have our partner do the same. Libra energy often seems to feel that it is incomplete, and needs a relationship in order to become whole. Libra must learn that it does not need to rely on others in order to be whole.

Planets in Libra become more balanced in their expression, and show more of a tendency to compromise in order to maintain peace and harmony. Planets in Libra are able to see both sides of any issue, which can be difficult for planets like Mars or the Sun, who need to be able to take direct, focused action. Venus in Libra displays Venus' more objective, less emotional side. The Moon in Libra has difficulty expressing deep emotions, and may look to relationships for a sense of security and safety.
