Gemini is the third sign of the zodiac and represents the third stage of human evolution. Gemini follows Taurus, and is the point where we first begin to realize that our bodies are separate from the rest of the world. Things exist that are not a part of us, that are separate from our sense of self. Gemini seeks to explore and understand our relationship to the rest of the world. Gemini is a mutable air sign. As a mutable sign, Gemini is concerned with completion, healing, and becoming whole. As an air sign, Gemini operates on the mental plane, and is most comfortable with abstract ideas, notions, and symbols. Gemini is therefore concerned with healing and completing our mental facilities; with pursuing a comprehensive understanding of the world of ideas. Gemini is arguably the most mutable of the signs; it is certainly the quickest in motion, and the one that is the most prone to change. Gemini expresses the fundamental nature of duality, and pursues it's understanding of the world by exploring the two extremes of any situation, and forming a connection between the opposite ends of the spectrum. As an air sign, Gemini moves quickly across the surface, exploring everything and attempting to map the terrain. Gemini energy is by far the most curious and inquisitive of all the signs. It delights in new experiences and has a sincere desire to try absolutely everything at least once. Ruled by the planet Mercury, Gemini is motivated to understand, to explore, and to communicate. Gemini ultimately seeks to connect the higher and the lower mind (although in order to do this, Gemini must also work with it's opposite sign, Sagittarius). Gemini is extremely flexible and versatile. Gemini's genuine interest in almost everything lends it a great deal of charm, and Gemini is almost always at ease in social situations. Meeting new people, starting up conversations with strangers - well, this is just another way of discovering more pieces to the puzzle of life, something that Gemini embraces with a passion. What Gemini must learn, however, is to focus. None of the air signs are particularly comfortable with deep emotions, but Gemini tends to be the most uncomfortable of all. Gemini can be so flexible and adaptable that it will either avoid obstacles, or if that isn't possible, it will change in order to prevent any kind of confrontation, any situation that might slow it down, or force Gemini to put down roots and explore an issue on a deeper level. Gemini's curiosity and fascination can be charming, certainly, but Gemini's insatiable curiosity is often accompanied by an extremely short attention span. Ultimately, Gemini must learn to slow down, and to step back so that it can begin to see the big picture. Gemini tends to focus entirely on the details, and can, as they say, miss the forest for the trees. Planets in Gemini become much quicker in their action, and often more playful. Gemini emphasizes the abstract, and planets in Gemini will tend to operate more in the mental realm. Planets that are steady and focused as a part of their nature will become more flexible and open in their expression, but they will also lose much of their focus. Planets like the Sun and Mars, who rely on being able to take direct action, have difficulty in Gemini, because they are always given at least two different courses of action to choose from. Planets that express emotion and sensitivity also have a difficult time in Gemini because they are not able to be as emotional as they need to be.
